![]() SILVERSTACK LAB VERIFICATIONI’ve personally seen clients copying crucial material without using copy and verification software and only making one back up. The task itself seems simple on the surface but it’s definitely more complex than meets the eye and the responsibility is huge. They see it as an easy task, ‘it’s just copy and paste so it should be simple right?’. ![]() I’ve seen a lot of undermining of the DIT / Data Wrangler Role where Producers or Production Managers try and save some money by doing data themselves or farming it out to the runner who already has 300 other things to do. Do you think a lot of people don’t take copy verification seriously enough?ĭefinitely. This becomes particularly crucial when you are 14 Hours into a shoot day and feeling very tired, mistakes will be made and you need to be able to catch them. Only when I get ticks from all my little processes do I move on. We are humans, not robots, so I take a layered approach where I am always cross checking myself and the software. Often times you will get interrupted while running your quality control checks and have to come back to it, when starting and stopping tasks like this it’s easy to forget where you are up to or to make mistakes and miss things. My process factors in the human condition and has lots of contingencies built in that allows for human error and software error. Copy and Verification Software has your back, it performs checksums to verify your offloads, creates detailed reports and produces a paper trail that can be referenced later. If you make a mistake there is no one there to call you out until it is too late. I work primarily in TVCs and I’m often in situations where you are managing big data on multi-million dollar commercials and no one else is checking your work. When working as a DIT or Data Wrangler you are responsible for the data integrity of a project. Why is it important to use copy and verification software and what are your recommended practices for doing it? I want to be able to recommend the fastest and safest offload tool so I decided to run an experiment and pit the four big players against one another. Over the past few weeks I’ve been testing out our new Data Deluxe System and as always, speed is a priority. For the rest of the job I used Silverstack and it has been my software of choice ever since. When you are doing 1TB Offloads this 100MB/s equates to a massive time-saving. This was using the exact same drive, media, and connection configuration. The specifics I have archived in my email but I believe we were getting around 100MB/s faster offloads with Silverstack compared to Shotput Pro. SILVERSTACK LAB TRIALSo I decided to grab a trial version of Silverstack XT and run some tests. SILVERSTACK LAB PROI recall offloading with Shotput Pro and thinking it wasn’t as fast as it should be. Standalone I was getting around 600MB/s off the RAID Drives. We were using the Codex Vault XL coupled with a MacBook Pro and 2x 5 Bay RAID 5 Drives. If there was any job worthy of testing out a different data management system, it was this one. I had been curious about Silverstack for a while but had never given it a red hot go. I believe this was before Hedge was on the scene and I wasn’t aware of YoYotta. It was one of the first jobs in the country to use this new camera system and there was a lot of prep work and learning to be done as we figured out the best way to manage bucket loads of data while traveling from state to state on a very tight schedule.īefore the job, I had been a dedicated Shotput Pro user. Why did you decide to look more deeply into copy and verification software?Ī few years ago I did a TVC all around Australia using the Alexa 65. Here are the questions I posed to Bradley. ![]() They all got back to him and posed some questions bringing new information to the surface which he looked into and then decided to run the tests again. He compiled his results into a detailed blog post and sent it through privately to each respective developer. I caught up with Bradley Andrew from Filmdrives to ask him some questions and to show you his super in-depth article comparing some of the most popular copy and verification software.īradley recently ran some tests comparing the offload speeds of Shotput Pro, Silverstack, Hedge and YoYotta. ![]() What if I was to tell you that is not the case. You might be under the impression that all copy and verification software must do the same thing in the same way, and take the same amount of time to complete. ![]()

Diagonal Lines Add Dynamism and DirectionalityĪs I emphasized above, diagonal lines guide the viewer through a scene. The viewer is pulled – or even dragged – along the diagonals.Īnd diagonals often intersect with other horizontal or vertical lines, so you’ll often end up with further tension as key compositional elements clash. Instead, diagonal lines bring tension to a composition. And while they help direct the eye throughout the frame, they do it comfortably.īecause they tilt, there’s never any sense of stability. They move firmly up and down, which keeps the visual tension to a minimum. Diagonal Lines Add Tension to Composition ![]() So by incorporating a diagonal river, rock, or jetty into the composition, a photographer can effectively enhance the three-dimensionality of their final image. Scenes that are otherwise pretty flat can instantly come to life with the inclusion of a nice diagonal. In fact, as many photographers have realized, using diagonal lines to produce the illusion of depth works really, really well. Since depth is displayed through diagonal lines, we can reverse engineer that effect – by adding diagonal lines in order to produce depth. If you observe very, very carefully, you’ll see that – as the road moves toward the horizon – its two edges move diagonally (and generally converge at a point in the distance).īecause, while the road edges are technically straight, diagonal lines help us perceive depth.Īnd we, as photographers, can use that. Have you ever looked at a road stretching off into the distance? So once a viewer’s eyes catch a diagonal, they slide along it, as if pulled by gravity! Interrupting the static composition with the diagonal lines Why Do Diagonal Lines Work?ĭiagonal lines are powerful compositional elements.Īnd photographers love them for three major reasons: Diagonal Lines Create the Illusion of Depth After all, a horizontal line or a vertical line is naturally stable it won’t lean or tilt in any direction.īut a diagonal line is, by definition, tilting. …they just don’t give the viewer that extra push through the shot. You see, a horizontal line stretches flat across an image, like a horizon.Īnd a vertical line stretches from top to bottom, like a tree trunk.īut while these types of lines can look good, and can certainly improve a composition… ![]() Unlike horizontal and vertical lines, diagonal lines pack a lot of movement. Diagonal Lines vs Horizontal and Vertical Lines Without diagonal lines, you’ll often end up with a static image.īut pack in a diagonal or two, and your images will be bursting with energy. ![]() Diagonal lines help to create depth, a sense of tension, and dynamism. They guide the eye through the frame, carefully taking the viewer through the photograph. …then let’s get started! What Are Diagonal Lines in Photography Composition?ĭiagonal lines are a compositional element that stretches diagonally across a photo. So if you’re ready to become a master of diagonal compositions… Today, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about diagonal lines in photography.īecause diagonal lines are one of my absolute favorite composition techniques – and with a diagonal line or two, you can take a humdrum, conventional composition and make it into a photo that’ll turn heads. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For more than 4,000 years, the region that now encompasses Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian Territories, and Cyprus has been a nexus where priests, merchants, armies, and immigrants created a cosmopolitan culture with global significance.
